Manufacturing Update #2

THE FIRST CUT IS THE DEEPEST

We’re back with another update from Jord

25th June 2019

The AJAX universal milling machine is now up and running and we have taken our very first cuts. This cutting method will replace our old technique of abrasive wheel notching, with a faster, more accurate and cleaner cut.

The image below shows a head tube mitre cut being made on a Reynolds 853 downtube. The fixturing used within this setup is supplied by Anvil Bikes out in Colorado who specialise in well engineered bike specific fixtures and tooling.

In addition to getting power to the machine, we have taken delivery of the steel CNC components for the hardtails. The picture below shows the infamous Switchback/ Switch9er double yoke with the machined crown logo.

It is little finishing touches like this that I believe make a product, where attention to detail is favoured over cost to manufacture.

Yoke And Crown

It is for that reason why we have decided to change the style of the ‘Switch Range’ dropouts to a fully CNC component within our next UK Gen frames. The new dropout design can be seen in the image, with a similar style to that of our titanium frames.

Although these are much more costly to produce than the old style plate dropouts- I think you will agree that they look the part!

Manufacturing Update #1

MANUFACTURING HAS BEGUN!

Each week we’ll be giving you an update on where we’re at, and who better to do that than our Head of Engineering, Jordan.

So here we go, over to Jord!

13th June 2019

We’ve finally begun work manufacturing our Next Gen UK hardtail frames in house right here in Matlock at the Stanton HQ.

All major machinery, jigs and fixtures have been purchased and in the coming weeks we will be developing the many different processes that go into manufacturing a hardtail frame. Not only will we be bringing together the different techniques and processes required to build our hardtail frames from scratch, but we will also start working with a new material here at the Stanton HQ… Titanium.

As you will be aware this is a much more expensive material that is more difficult to work and weld compared with steel and aluminium. Fortunately we have our expert welder Ollie at hand, who’s experience working with exotic materials for the aerospace industry should make it a ride in the park!

The aim of this email is to provide a weekly update with the progress of the hardtail development from engineering drawing, through to manufacture and finally to the finished product delivered to your door.

This week will include the integration of the AJAX universal milling machine pictured below.

It may look a little rough around the edges, but it has an integrated linear glass encoder system and digital read out to allow accurate cuts to fractions of a millimetre. This will ensure that every mitre cut made to the tubes will form a perfect joint- essential for a strong and straight bike!!

Thank you for your support and I hope you are as excited as we are for UK manufactured hardtail frames in both Reynolds steel and Titanium!
